Antonio Angulo y Heredia (1837–1875) was a Cuban poet, writer, and philosopher born in Matanzas, Cuba, on August 4, 1837. He came from a prominent family; his father, José Miguel Angulo y Heredia, was an intellectual and reformist, and his mother, María Ignacia Heredia y Heredia, was the sister of the renowned poet José María Heredia. Angulo studied at prestigious Cuban institutions, including La Empresa, El Plantel, and El Salvador, where he was mentored by José de la Luz y Caballero, a key figure in Cuban philosophy. He later pursued law at the University of Havana and completed his degree in Madrid in 1863.
Angulo is best known for his contributions to Cuban philosophy, particularly his advocacy of Krausism, a German philosophical movement emphasizing tolerance, academic freedom, and secularism. He studied the works of Karl Christian Friedrich Krause during a trip to Germany in 1860 and promoted these ideas in Spain, aligning them with liberal principles. In 1864, he founded and co-edited the *Revista Hispano-Americana* in Madrid, a platform for political, scientific, and literary discourse, where he published works like *Estudios sobre los Estados Unidos de América* (1865), analyzing American democracy and self-governance. He also contributed to the Cuban newspaper *Aurora del Yumurí* under the pseudonym "Un joven cubano," writing letters on European scientific and literary movements.
His notable works include *Schiller y Goethe*, a series of lectures on German literature delivered at the Ateneo of Madrid, and a Spanish translation of Eduardo Laboulaye’s *París en América* (1867). Angulo was a vocal advocate for reformist and abolitionist ideas, contributing to debates on Cuba’s political situation. Tragically, he suffered a mental breakdown and died in Valladolid, Spain, on September 5, 1875, at age 38.
